Scandinavian Design

I spent the spring semester of my junior year in Copenhagen, learning the in’s and out’s of Scandinavian design, with the goal of designing and producing a flat pack lounge chair. The result is as follows:

LS2

Flat pack plywood lounge chair. Made in Denmark. 2023.

Design Goals

1. Environment

I believe it is our duty as industrial designers to ensure that the products we bring into the future are designed sustainably.

2. Practicality

The chair needs to lay flat in its disassembled state to maximize production and shipping efficiency

Mood Board

PK 22. Poul Kjaerholm. 1956.

3. Price

My goal is to bring to bring the principles of Scandinavian modernism to an accessible market.

PK 27. Poul Kjaerholm. 1971.

4. Comfort

Last but certainly not least, the chair must be a comfortable place in which people want to spend time

LCW. Charles and Ray Eames. 1946.

After visiting, testing and drawing just about every chair one could cover in a semester of furniture design history, these three chairs stood out to me as the ideal balance between simplicity, quality and comfort.
